Kaif was born in Hong Kong to an Indian Kashmiri father, Mohammed Kaif, and an English mother, Suzanne Turquotte, both of whom are British citizens. Her parents divorced when she was very young. Kaif has seven siblings. She was raised in Hawaii and later moved to her mother's home country, England.
Career

Kaif began her modeling career at the age fourteen; her first job was for a jewelry campaign. She continued modeling in London under a contract with the Models 1 Agency and did campaigns for houses such as La Senza and Arcadius, and even walked on the London Fashion Week.

Kaif's London modeling-work led to her discovery by London-based filmmaker Kaizad Gustad, who gave her a part in his film Boom (2003). She moved to Mumbai and was offered a number of modeling assignments. However, filmmakers were initially hesitant to sign her because she could not speak Hindi.

Kaif saw moderate success with the 2005 film Sarkar, where she played the bit part of Abhishek Bachchan's girlfriend, and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005), where she was paired opposite Salman Khan.

In 2007, Kaif appeared in her first major hit movie, Namastey London, wherein she starred as a British Indian girl alongside Akshay Kumar for the second time after the box office letdown Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006). Her run of hit films continued with Apne, Partner, and Welcome.

Kareena is the granddaughter of the famous Raj Kapoor and daughter of actor/producer Randhir and Hindi film actress Babita. She did her schooling from Jamnabai Narsee School and later from Welham Girls, Dehradun. She has a degree from Mithibai College and went to Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting School. Kareena Kapoor debuted in the film Refugee (2000) along with Abhishek Bachchan. In 2001, Kareena starred in Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai opposite Tusshar Kapoor. She also has been a part of movies like Yaadein, Asoka, Ajnabee and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.Kareena also played the role of a prostitute in the 2004 film Chameli, which proved to be a turning point in her career.Later in the same year, Kareena played a negative role for the first time in Ken Ghosh's Fida and played her first comic role in Hulchul.Some other releases include Aitraaz, Bewafaa, 36 China Town and Chup Chup Ke.However, Kareena was highly recognised for her portrayal of Desdemona in the Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello, Omkara.Kareena's latest movie is Imtiaz Ali's Jab We Met, which went on to become a great hit at the box office. In 2008, she won the Filmfare award for best actress for the same film Jab We Met. Her subsequent release Tashan failed to set the box office on fire.

Her melodrama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... became India's highest-grossing film in the overseas market in 2001, and is one of her biggest commercial successes to date. After receiving negative reviews for a series of repetitive roles, Kapoor accepted more demanding parts in order to avoid being typecast, and was consequently recognized by critics for displaying greater versatility as an actress. Her portrayal of a sex worker in Chameli (2004) proved to be the turning point in her career and she was later noted for her performances in the critically acclaimed Dev (2004) and Omkara (2006).

In 2007, Kapoor received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in Jab We Met, a romantic comedy directed by Imtiaz Ali. She went on to play the lead female role in the thriller Kurbaan (2009), for which she earned critical acclaim, and the drama 3 Idiots (2009), which became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time.Having done so, Kapoor has established herself as a leading actress of the Hindi film industry.
